Francisco Suárez is arguably the most important Neo-Scholastic philosopher and a vital link in the chain leading from medieval philosophy to that of the Renaissance and the Enlightenment. Long neglected by the Anglo-Saxon philosophical community, this sixteenth-century Jesuit theologian is now an object of intense scholarly attention. A Companion to Francisco Suárez examines the thought of scholasticism’s Doctor eximius in its entirety: both philosophically and theologically. Many of the most distinctive features of Suárez’s thought are identified and evaluated in light of his immediate historical context. What emerges from the studies contained in this volume is the picture of a thinker who is profoundly steeped in the riches of divergent schools of thought and yet who manages to find his own unique voice to add to the chorus of scholasticism.

1492-1612 - De l'expulsion des Juifs d'Espagne, de la Découverte et de la Conquête de l'Amérique à la publication à Coïmbra du De Legibus de Francisco Suárez, en passant par le Sermon de Montesinos (1511), les Leçons de Vitoria à Salamanque (1539) et la controverse de Valladolid (1550) : en cet espace de temps qui voit redéfinir les causes de la juste guerre, le sens de l'évangélisation, le contrat constitutif du corps politique comme communauté parfaite, s'élaborent conjointement la notion moderne ou pré-moderne de droit naturel et la détermination nouvelle du droit des gens, compris comme droit international interétatique, en même temps que s'installe un fragile équilibre entre autorité et puissance ecclésiales d'un côté et monarchies absolues, de droit divin, de l'autre. Contexte historique et géopolitique, dimension théologico-politique - où le plus souvent les positions idéologiques s'établissent à fronts renversés - et anthropologie philosophique de la pure nature, tels sont les premiers éléments à prendre en compte pour apprécier la véritable nouveauté de la détermination suarézienne de la loi qui s'emporte dans un inachevable processus de sécularisation. Publisher's description: Warum können Normen und Gesetze zu bestimmten Handlungen verpflichten? Was genau ist eine rechtliche oder moralische Verpflichtung, wie wirkt sie und wie entsteht sie? Und wer darf und kann überhaupt wirksam verpflichten? Antwortversuche auf derlei Fragen führen zu den Grundlagen und Voraussetzungen von Rechtstheorie und Moralphilosophie. Gelingt es, solche Grundlagen auf die Natur des Menschen und damit auf die Möglichkeiten und Bedingungen seines Erkennens, Wollens und Handelns zurückzuführen, so kann eine Letztbegründung von Recht und Moral versucht werden. (1548-1617) unternimmt einen solchen Versuch in seinen verschiedenen Schriften zur Rechtphilosophie und Moraltheologie und leistet damit nicht nur einen historisch relevanten Beitrag zur Naturrechtstradition der Frühen Neuzeit, sondern ebenso zu systematischen Problemstellungen der heutigen philosophischen Debatte, beginnend bei der Fundierung von Moralität im individuellen Gewissen bis hin zu Wesen und Ausgestaltung des Völkerrechts. Stefan Schweighöfer zeigt die Verbindungslinien zwischen den verschiedenen Werken von Francisco Suárez und rekonstruiert so philosophische Positionen, die man gewöhnlich erst in der Tradition Kants verortet. Dabei werden insbesondere auch die Schriften berücksichtigt, die bisher in keiner modernen Sprache zugänglich sind.

This volume deals with basic questions regarding the philosophical knowledge of God in Suárez and Descartes, two very different, but historically linked early-modern philosophers. It has two parts devoted to Suárez and Descartes respectively. Each section examines the path along which philosophy can acquire knowledge of God, the adequacy which is ascribed to this knowledge, as well as selected topics of the doctrine of God's attributes. Special attention has been given to both critical and positive reactions to Suárez and Descartes on the part of seventeenth-century Dutch Reformed theologians. The author argues that Descartes, in comparison with Suárez, reduced the theological interests of philosophy and also limited the starting points for attaining to a philosophical knowledge of God. On the other hand, Descartes elevated the presumed adequacy of this knowledge.
